ARMED WITH THE WORD OF GOD

SCRIPTURE: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. – James 4:7

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Do not wait for problems to arise before looking for the Word of God.

I once heard a story of what a soldier did during the Nigeria Civil War. In the course of the battle, the enemy threw a hand grenade into the camp of soldiers where this particular soldier was. Instead of allowing the grenade to land, explode and kill everyone, he caught it and threw it back at the enemies. The bomb exploded midway and blasted his hand, but everybody in his camp was saved. What a heart!

God’s Word is a Shield that returns arrows to the sender. Just as the soldier threw the grenade back to the enemy, you can load yourself with Word ammunitions in the form of general purpose machine gun bullets and rocket propelled grenades, so that when the devil throws anything at you, you can throw back ten or more Word bullets at him.

Beloved, do not wait for problems to arise before looking for the Word of God. Instead, be loaded with God’s Word ready to explode against the onslaught of the devil. Be armed with God’s Word all the time.

Remember this: Do not wait for problems to arise before looking for the Word of God.

THE DOUBLE IMPACT OF PRAYER

SCRIPTURE: And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. - Luke 9:29.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Prayer does not only change things; it also changes people.

The importance of prayer in the life of a Christian cannot be over emphasized. Prayer connects man with God’s Presence, Principles and Power for the fulfillment of destiny on earth.

Now, let us look at the double impact of prayer in the life of a prayerful Christian:
1) Prayer changes things.
Negative situations of life are altered at the place of prayer; levels are changed at the place of prayer. So, if you want anything to change in your life, engage in aggressive and brutal prayer.

2) Prayer changes people.
Prayer does not only change things; it also changes people. The act of prayer changes the one who prays. From our anchor scripture, as Jesus prayed, the fashion of His countenance was changed; His garment became white and glistering. The man or woman who prays is changed by his or her prayer.

When a man is changed through prayer, his world also changes. As Jesus’ physical appearance changed, His world also changed; Elijah and Moses appeared to Him and told him of things which He must accomplish at Jerusalem. So, prayer changes a man and a changed man experiences a changed world.

Remember this: Prayer does not only change things; it also changes people.

ASSIGNMENT(S):
1. Engage in aggressive prayer primarily for the sake of relationship and fellowship with God.
2. Ask God, at the place of prayer, to change your life and situation.
3. Resist anything that tampers with your prayer life.

PRAYER: O LORD, I make demands on the grace to pray effectively. Let me experience a total change in my life in Jesus’ Name.

RESPONSIBILITY: THE DOORWAY TO POSSIBILITIES

SCRIPTURE: So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered, "but he is tending the sheep…" – 1 Samuel 16:11 (NIV).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Nothing can be possible until someone decides to be responsible

Responsibility is the secret of possibility. Anywhere possibilities abound, responsibilities are being taken.

Some time ago, someone called me on phone from the United Kingdom and said, “Sir, I have been following your programs on the Dunamis television, and observed that your schedules could be very hectic”. He was right; my schedules are indeed very tight. There are people who think that luck brought us to where we are today in ministry, but that is not true.

If someone takes my position and experiences my schedule of work for a month and realizes that it takes hours to prepare different messages for the six services on Sundays, Healing Service on Tuesdays, the two midweek services, not to mention the time invested in writing books, organizing crusades and other Kingdom activities demanding my attention; he would know that it is not luck but work that is behind where we are today.

Beloved, nothing can be possible until someone decides to be responsible. Anywhere people are experiencing drastic possibilities in their lives; it is not luck that is at work but responsibility at work.

Remember this: Nothing can be possible until someone decides to be responsible

ASSIGNMENT(S):
1.Ask God to show you what to do.
2.Wake up to the responsibility of taking practical actions for the fulfillment of your destiny.

PRAYER:
O LORD, I ask for the grace to take responsibility in order to see possibilities in my life. Help me, LORD, to obey Your Word in order to be what You created me for, in Jesus’ Name.

What do you do when you just don't like someone?

What do you do when you just don't like someone?

Unless you're a saint, there's almost certainly someone in your life who just always manages to rub you up the wrong way. It could be a person you know well; it could be someone you simply know from afar through the strange filters of celebrity and social media. I'm not talking about friends with whom you can have the occasional tiff here; I mean those people who you just find consistently irritating, and who help you to realise as a result that you're not quite the all-round kind, accepting and happy-go-lucky guy or gal you thought you were.
They tweet something that's intended to be charming; you react as if they've just threatened your grandmother. You see them at church laughing with a friend; you imagine they're hatching an evil plan to enslave the world's kittens. It doesn't matter what they do, you can't help yourself: they always provoke the very worst thoughts and reactions with you.
If you're anything like me, then not only are you acutely aware that you are this irritating person to many others, but you also know that it's not good to feel this way about someone. Jesus took this subject pretty seriously: in Matthew 5:23-24, in a section of the Bible commonly (and perhaps not coincidentally) subtitled "Murder", he says:

"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift."
Interestingly enough, he aims this at the irritators, rather than the irritated, essentially saying, if you know you've provoked someone else, make the first move to repair the relationship. In itself that's a timely reminder to fix the mistakes we make; but I think it also follows that Jesus more simply wants to see harmonious relationships between people. More than that, he wants to see them before we even think about investing in our eternal relationship with God. It's all a bit challenging when you stop to think about it.
So how do we fix these relationships? Especially when part of us really doesn't want to? Here are a few things which might work if we really commit to them...

1. Look for the best in them
When you've started to become irritated by something someone does, it's almost impossible not to become incredibly aware of that thing. So if your housemate talks while he eats, and such a thing is an offence to your nostrils (and eyes, and ears), then you'll soon rebrand them in your head as 'mouthful man', and it'll begin to define your relationship. So instead, try hard to focus on all the good things about that person; the kind things they do; the examples of excellence, selflessness and compassion in their lives. Try really hard to notice something good about them every time you see them; it'll be much easier not to see them in caricature as a result.

2. Pray for them
This might feel like the last thing you want to do, but once you get going it can be incredibly liberating. We tend to pray for the people we love and care about, but in practice the opposite can also be true: we start to care more about the things we pray for. As Pope Francis said, in possibly the most instantly-viral piece of theology ever, "you pray for the hungry, then you feed them: this is how prayer works." When we pray, we don't just enter into conversation; we open ourselves up to transformation. Prayer just makes you a kinder person. I'm sure that won't go quite as viral as the Pope thing, but it's still true.

3. Prefer and submit to them
In a culture of individualism, there's nothing more prophetic than the spiritual discipline of submission; putting the needs and agendas of others before our own. That's pretty easy when we're submitting to people we love and respect; leaders or family members for example; it's an entirely different matter to prefer those with whom we struggle. Yet there's something incredibly releasing about retweeting the annoying pronouncements of a church leader we don't think too much of (as long as it's not heresy); a simple act like that acknowledges that we're not the centre of the universe of the arbiter of good taste. Here's the really strange thing though: when we submit to others, and see them flourish, we feel an unlikely sense of pleasure; a bit like when you eat the least-favourite food you were served at a dinner party so as to avoid offending the host, and end up enjoying it.

4. Understand and overcome your problem
Crucially, if we're going to move past feelings of dislike for someone, we need to get to grips with the reason we don't actually like them. In some cases we know exactly what this is; in others, we only know that they provoke and irritate us. In the former case, there are probably always practical steps we can take (such as unfollowing the person online and only engaging with them in real life), but if it's deeper than that, then we can do worse than to seek out a wise and honest friend who'll help us to truly understand the problem. Sometimes it takes the perspective of a third person, who can look at you both impartially, and see what you can't

5. Get to know them better
Finally, the most painful but productive step at all; spending time with the person. It's a good idea to work through steps #1-4 before you move on to this, but once you have, there's no substitute for meeting and talking it all through. As part of this, it's important that two things happen. First, that we're vulnerable, and acknowledge our own flaws and faults; second that we name the problem, and try to address it together. I tend to think that's what Jesus has in mind in Matthew 5. Of course, this idea might be unworkable or simply fill you with coma-inducing dread, so in that case, just try to spend a bit more positive time around them.
The way we treat and talk about others can have a profound effect on how well we represent Jesus to the watching world. The best way to ensure that we do these things well is simply to ensure we don't let grumbles and grudges fester within us. So here's the simple challenge: who are you going to start responding to differently?

The Dress Code for a Disciple of Christ

The Dress Code for a Disciple of Christ

Paul, writing from prison to a church he founded, uses a wardrobe dilemma as a metaphor for Christian discipleship:

"You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness." (Ephesians 4.22-23)

Paul draws our attention to our change of outfits, our choice of outfits, and our challenge of outfits as a way to make us think and act differently as followers of Jesus in our world.

A change of outfit: what we wear links us to our past or our future.
In our family, when we enter our home we take our shoes off and change into clean and comfortable slippers. When we become Christians a similar exchange takes place: our old corrupt way of living is to be left behind, and a new clean way of living adopted.
Eight or more pairs of shoes at the doorway is, for some reason, a magnet to a toddler. It is not unusual to find one of our foster children walking around in a pair of oversized men's brogues. But what makes me look smart, makes him look like a clown. Except beyond the entertainment value, there is a glimpse into the future. One day he will swap his crocs for dress shoes just as he will swap the park for the office, and toys for the tools he needs to do his job. When Paul encourages us to change our outfit, he is asking us to taste the future. We are not yet recreated in the image of Jesus. The shoes don't fit us correctly yet. But just like my little boy in my big shoes – we look forward to the future when we will be perfectly dressed in the likeness of Jesus.

A choice of outfit: what we wear denotes our allegiance
Growing up I loved that every Remembrance day my mother would tell me stories about my grandfather who died in World War Two providing covering fire for his platoon. He was awarded the military cross for bravery and on the first Sunday of the month of November each year, I was allowed to wear his medal to church. As a boy this was a proud moment, and I remember walking a little taller and behaving a little better than usual, in an attempt to bring him honour. When Paul calls the Ephesians to put off the old self and be clothed in Christ, he wants us to wear our new identity with pride. The brands we choose – whether from the supermarket budget line or a limited edition Dolce and Gabbana getup – make an impression. Being clothed in Christ means to allow our commitment to Jesus to shape our presence in the world. Because our clothes make a difference in how others see us and treat us, being clothed in Christ means that we allow our allegiance to Christ to mark us out in the world, leaving an impression for Christ wherever we go and whatever we wear.

A challenge of outfits: what we wear equips us for our job
If I remember to put my running clothes out on top of the dresser before I go to sleep, then I am far more likely to start the next day by hitting the road. The outfit acts not only as a reminder of my resolve, but as a challenge to my lethargy, my excuses and my tendency to procrastination. Putting my running kit on prepares my mind as well as my body for the task ahead. If I put on my painting clothes instead, I am much less likely to run, and much more likely to freshen up the walls of my home. Paul tells us to clothe ourselves in Christ because this is our primary new vocation in life. We are to go out into the world to represent him to others, allowing his character to shape our hopes, ambitions, relationships, plans and behaviours.
Perhaps when you next change your clothes you might consider what it means for you to live as a disciple in our world. Perhaps when you put on your work or school uniform you might consider how you are not just publically associated with your company or your educational establishment but as a member of Christ's family and Kingdom. Whenever we put something on that doesn't quite fit, we can be reminded of our calling to live out the future reality of our transformation into the likeness of Christ now

PURSUIT: THE KEY TO RESTORATION

SCRIPTURE: And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. – Joel 2:25

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Desperate pursuit brings restoration.

The above scripture attests to the fact that we serve a God of restoration. God promised to restore the years the cankerworms had eaten out of our lives. If lost years can be restored, then there is nothing that cannot be recovered when God is involved regardless of the number of years it has been lost.

What, then, is the key to restoration?

Desperate Pursuit
Desperate pursuit is maintaining an unquenchable passion towards achieving or recovering a thing. It is a situation where a person loses a thing but refuses to let it go. Desperate pursuit brings restoration.

An example of desperate pursuit in the scripture was how David pursued a lion and rescued a lamb from its mouth when he was keeping his father’s flock. When the lion tried to fight back, David caught it by the beard, smote it and slew it (1 Samuel 17:34-36). For a fearful person, this feat would have been impossible.

Beloved, it is desperate pursuit that brings restoration. May you receive the spirit, force and frightfulness of David in Jesus’ Name!

Remember this: Desperate pursuit brings restoration.

ASSIGNMENT(S):
1. Ask God for the restoration of anything that is lost in your life.
2. Desperately pursue the restoration of any lost item in your life like David did.

PRAYER: O LORD, I ask for the restoration of every lost virtue, grace or resource in my life. Restore to me, O LORD, the years that the cankerworms have eaten out of my life, in Jesus’ Name.

Greatest Gift You can Give | Timothy Benedict |

Time is a perishable resource that can not be stored, stopped or retrieved. Weight is measured in kilos, length measured in meters and distance measured in miles but life is measured by time. Whatever activity, relationship and engagement you are involved in per time is actually depleting a portion of your life. The summary is, whatever is not profitable for the future does not deserve much attention today. Confirm if you heard.

THE ENEMIES OF DEDICATION | Timothy Benedict |

THE ENEMIES OF DEDICATION Romans 12:11
To serve God and serve Him effectively requires fervency of spirit.
1) The loss of passion or commitment or dedication to God and His work is the beginning of vulnerability to the enemy. Whenever the enemy is sucking away your dedication to God he is exposing you to destruction - Mathew 13:22. Don't be carried away by the cares of this world and deceitfulness of riches. Has your passion to pray, evangelize, study the word gone? If yes, it is a state of emergency. The state and events of life were programmed to fight against the spiritual growth of God's children. Isaiah 59:19 - Never abandon or abdicate attention to your spirituality, for it is the spirit of God that raises a standard against the devil when he comes like a flood. Anything not attended to begins to depreciate; has no future.
a. James 4:4 - Commitment to things of the world can never marry dedication to God. They are two parallel lines. Know that wealth and riches are there as tools.
b. Where you invest most of our time determines where you get the most results.
c. What commands our attention determines what gives our life direction.

2) The degree of our yielded-ness to God determines the extent of our usefulness to Him - Romans 12:1-2. Until the mind is continually renewed the destiny cannot express goodness. God is willing to use you if you will yield yourself. That vessels are available does not mean that all are useful. Note that no organization showcases it's wrong candidate. If you need God to use you extravagantly dedicate yourself completely.

3) The systems of the word are positioned to resist a believer's spiritual progress - Luke 9:57-62. The cares of life are major distracting issues in one's spiritual progress. Never allow any man's conviction distract you from the service of God. There appears an onslaught from hell to destroy our spiritual life. Don't compromise because everyone does. Stand for God. Anything you compromise to get is not yours, for you will need to compromise to keep it. Distracting issues are meant to arrest your attention and detain your destiny.
What are the enemies of dedication?

1. An unconscious forgetfulness of our spiritual root.

2. Unusual busyness with the physical affairs of life. It is not wisdom to mortgage what is eternal for what is temporal. People are being damned to hell on account of compromise - 1 John 2:15-16. Nothing should take the place of God in your life. Never do anything to impress anybody. Live your life and size per time, for life is in phases and sizes.

Goliath's burial site, First-ever Philistine cemetery discovered

Is this Goliath's burial site? First-ever Philistine cemetery discovered
Jerusalem (CNN)Archaeologists have unearthed the first Philistine cemetery ever discovered, shedding light on an ancient civilization that was home to one of the Bible's most famous villains.
Historians have long hoped to learn more about the Philistines, and the burial ground offers insight into this ancient and historic population.
The Philistines are best known for Goliath, the giant who challenged a young David to battle near the Valley of Elah; the pair's story is recounted in the biblical books of Samuel.

The 3,000-year-old site was found at Ashkelon, in southern Israel; its discovery marks the culmination of more than 30 years of exploration at the site.
"This cemetery is going to teach us a whole lot about the Philistines that we've never known before," said Daniel Master, professor of archaeology at Wheaton College and co-director of the Leon Levy Expedition to Ashkelon.
"We've learned about their houses, we've learned about what they ate and we learned about who they traded with, but now we're seeing the people themselves."
Archaeologists unearthed skeletons, individually buried with their own jugs, storage jars, and bowls. The small jugs are assumed to have been filled with perfumed oil.

DNA testing

Some skeletons were even found wearing bracelets and earrings, while others had weapons.
The cemetery also had evidence of cremations, pit internment, and multi-chambered tombs.
"Ninety-nine percent of the chapters and articles written about Philistine burial customs should be revised or ignored now that we have the first and only Philistine cemetery found just outside the city walls of Tel Ashkelon," said Lawrence Stager, a professor of archaeology at Harvard University and a co-director of the expedition.
Bone samples taken from the site will undergo three different types of testing - DNA, radiocarbon and biological distance studies - to help determine the origin of the Philistines. Biblical passages suggest the community came by sea from ancient Crete.
Ashkelon, where the cemetery was found, is known as one of the five cities of the Philistines. It was a major Mediterranean port and a hub for maritime trade until the Crusades, when it was destroyed; it remained deserted until modern times.

Jurgen Klopp - The new Liverpool Manager is not hiding his Christian faith

Jurgen Klopp - The new Liverpool Manager is not hiding his Christian faith

Romans 1:16 - For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

Liverpool FC, one of the biggest football clubs in the world has unveiled German Jurgen Klopp as their new manager.

He is a popular figure in Germany because of his outspoken nature and the success he brought to former club Borussia Dortmund, where he won two league titles and got to the final of the European Champions League.
Car brand Opel has also credited him with turning around its fortunes in the country, saying his role as ambassador helped boost sales of its Insignia model by 35% in 2014.
He has even had pop songs written about him with eccentric media personality Matze Knop releasing a tribute titled 'I Wanna Be Like Jurgen Klopp'.
But what you might not know about him is that he is a committed Christian and is not afraid of making his faith known.
Prior to managing Borussia Dortmund, Klopp was in charge of another German club, Mainz, and after a defeat was known to have been asked by reporters if the 'football god' was against Mainz.
In an article about his faith, he wrote: 'In order to answer this question once and for all: although there is no football God, I believe that there is a God who loves us humans, just as we are, with all our quirks, and that's why I think he also loves football! But we have to score our own goals.'
But his piece for fussball-gott.com (soccer-god.com) gets deeper.
'All of these really likeable guys who I meet week in week out at matches or in some cases even in training, have one thing in common: they have noticed at some stage in their careers that there must be more to life than championship and relegation battles.
'They relate how a relationship with God has changed their perspective.'
In an age in which each successful new manager is praised for his novel 'football philosophy', Klopp is adamant that his faith is more important to him than the game.
In an interview with fr-online.de, he said: 'To be a believer, but not to want to talk about it - I do not know how it would work! If anyone asks me about my faith, I give information. Not because I have claim to be any sort of missionary. But when I look at me and my life - and I take time for that every day - then I feel I am in sensationally good hands.
'And I find it a pity if other people lack this sense of security - although they don't know it, of course, because otherwise they would probably look for it.'
He also relates how he had to grapple with important lifestyle questions even at a young age: 'At about 13, 14 years old, the question arose: Can I actually kick on Sunday morning, even though I was supposed to go to church?
'It can't be that I've got such a love and passion for the sport, only for me to be prevented from training for the sake of one hour of church on Sunday - especially since there is plenty of time in the rest of the week for faith.
'Since then I've realised that the matter is clear for me.'
From today thousands of Liverpool supporters will be putting their faith in Jurgen Klopp.

KEY THOUGHTS ON PRAYER

SCRIPTURE: Pray without ceasing. – 1 Thessalonians 5:17

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The art of prayer is learnt at the place of prayer.

Prayer is a basic necessity of life. It is your lifeline and connecting cord to your Source (God) through which your life is transformed for eternity.

If you desire to be anything in life, prayer must become everything in your life.
Prayer has connection with God’s Presence, vision, direction, wisdom, power, preservation, purity and a person’s identity on earth. You cannot be stronger than the strength of your prayer life; your outcome in life is directly proportional to your prayer fire.

Beloved, please take note of the two key thoughts on prayer below:

1. The Art of prayer is learnt at the place of prayer.
If you do not know how to pray, start praying and you will know how to pray. The more you pray, the more you will know how to pray, and the less you pray, the less you will know how to pray.

2.The devil is more intimidated by the strength of your relationship with God than by the frequency of your attendance in church.

Beloved, make up your mind to prioritize prayer above all other things.

Remember this: The art of prayer is learnt at the place of prayer.

ASSIGNMENT(S):
1. Make up your mind to pray consistently
2. Interrupt your personal schedule to spend time with God.

PRAYER: O LORD, I ask for the grace to pray fervently. Deal with every spirit of lukewarmness in my life in Jesus’ Name.

THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR GREATNESS

SCRIPTURE: I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee. – Luke 15:18.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: To every form of ability, there is a responsibility.

In life, many people claim the promises of God’s word without making conscious effort to take the responsibility that comes with fulfilling God’s purpose. It is not enough to claim prophesies or promises; it is rewarding to have them fulfilled. It is taking responsibility that facilitates the fulfillment of those prophecies or promises.

It has been established that to every form of ability, there is a responsibility.

Beloved, ask yourself the questions below; they will put you on the path of taking responsibility for the fulfillment of your vision or that of your organization.

1. In what way would my assignment contribute to the fulfillment of my vision and that of my organization?

First victims of Russian ban on evangelism

First victims of Russian ban on evangelism

Fri 26 Aug 2016
By Antony Bushfield
An American man is among the first group of people to be targeted under new anti-evangelism laws in Russia.
In July the country passed legislation banning the public from discussing their faith outside of churches and other designated places.
The rules were contained in anti-terror laws and make it illegal to preach, teach or share faith outside state-controlled settings.
Donald Ossewaarde, a Baptist minister, was working in the city of Oryol, about 360 kilometres south-southwest of Moscow when he was visited by police.
They accused him of "unlawfully conducting missionary activity" by having Bible meetings at his home.
Mr Ossewaarde, pictured above with his wife Ruth, was fined £550 after being advised by a state lawyer to plead guilty and not appeal.
A statement from his personal legal team, SCLJ attorneys, said: "The problem is not the fine but the fact that the court decided that Donald's exercise of his right to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ according to his beliefs is an illegal action.
"Donald was arrested in his own home, where policemen came to establish the fact that a group was meeting with him for prayer and Bible reading, which they say is illegal.
"In court, Donald was also accused of posting notices in public places, inviting anyone interested in studying the Scriptures to turn him for help."
Mr Ossewaarde's family have fled the country and returned to the US in fear of their safety.
He has remained in Russia to appeal against the fine and conviction.

Continued Persecution:

Christian leader in China gets 7 years in jail for 'harming social stability'

Another innocent Christian is being deprived of his freedom for standing up for his faith in God.
Christian church leader Hu Shigen has been sentenced to seven years of imprisonment in China, as the communist country continues its crackdown against human rights activists.
According to a report from BBC News, Hu was convicted after a trial that lasted only a few hours. He was jailed for "damaging national security and harming social stability"—charges that the Christian church leader pleaded guilty to.

Aside from his imprisonment, Hu was also stripped of his political rights for five years.
Chinese state media described Hu as the "leader of an underground church" that was only supposedly pretending to be a religious body, but in reality, is an organsation meant to draw attention to abuses being committed by the government in China.

The government-controlled press in China also reportedly quoted prosecutors who charged Hu as saying that the "ideology and behaviors" of the Christian church leader "seriously harmed the country and social stability."
This is not the first time that Hu is being imprisoned in China. He had previously served 20 years in prison for the now-abolished charge of counter-revolution. He was released in 2008.
Hu is just one of many Christians being persecuted in China. Around 300 lawyers and activists have been arrested, including 20 individuals who have been detained by the communist state since last year as part of a national campaign, which international organisations see as an attempt to silence critics of the Chinese government.

Chinese activitist Zhai Yanmin, for instance, was recently imprisoned also for alleged subversion. He was sentenced to a three-year jail term.
Lawyers from the Fengrui law firm are also being harassed by Chinese officials for supposedly collaborating with Hu on "how to get lawyers involved with sensitive incidents," and for supposedly being connected to anti-China forces.

Answers for Pastors

How Can I Grow in My Understanding of Sound Doctrine?- Answers for Pastors -

How can I grow in my understanding of sound doctrine?
  1. Give heed to the preached Word. Listen attentively as your pastor expounds God’s Word each week. Discuss the sermon afterward with friends and family.
  2. Study the Scriptures diligently. Aim for breadth and depth. That is, read through all of Scripture in order to see the big picture. But also, study smaller portions such as individual books, in the most detail you can manage. Read them over and over again. Meditate on them. Memorize them. Gaining a broad and deep grasp of Scripture is the most important way to grow in the knowledge of God.
  3. Read good books. Ask your pastor for a list of the best theology books he knows and read them.
  4. Discuss the Bible with mentors and friends. As you discuss the Bible’s teaching, apply it to your lives together.
  5. Do evangelism. Explaining the gospel to non-Christians and answering some of their objections will strengthen your grasp on the gospel, sharpen your ability to communicate the gospel, and expose areas in your theology that you need to develop further.
  6. Teach the Bible and theology to younger Christians. Teaching others, whether one-on-one, in a Bible study, in a Sunday School class, or even preaching, will compel you to study the Scriptures closely, understand them coherently, and communicate them clearly. All this will deepen your understanding of sound doctrine and enable you to use your knowledge to build up others.

Christian in US air force allowed to keep Bible on Desk

Christian in US air force allowed to keep Bible on desk

Fri 26 Aug 2016
By Hannah Tooley
A Christian serving in the United States Air Force has been allowed to keep a Bible on his desk, following an investigation.
There had been a dispute after the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) called for action over the issue.
According to The Christian Institute, it asked for "swift" and "visible" action after US Air Force Major Steve Lewis had a Bible displayed open on his desk.
The Air Force concluded that the major had no abused any liberties and that displaying an Bible on a desk is "well within the provisions" of its regulations on religious expression.
According to the group, pictures taken of the desk show a Bible open on the book of Philippians, with some verses highlighted and underlined.
Steve Lewis removed the Bible after a dispute, saying he did not want to "cause attention or disruption to his unit."
The MRFF complained about the display of Christianity which it say caused "subordinates" to see it each day.

10 Reasons to Talk More about Heaven

10 Reasons to Talk More About Heaven

Sadly it is easy to be distracted, temporal concerns can easily grab our attention and overall it seems like we don’t think or talk about heaven nearly enough. Here are ten reasons why heaven should often be on our minds and in our conversations.

We will spend eternity there
This is obvious but we have to start here. John in Revelation 21:3-4 says, And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” This verse reminds us of the fact that heaven is eternal and that it is much more glorious than anything we can experience on earth. When we experience pain, sadness and even death our minds should jump to the joy we will experience forever with Christ.

It will make us like Jesus
Jesus trained his disciples to have heavenly thoughts. Every beatitude seems to be pointing to a day where the disciples would be recompensed in Heaven. He constantly spent time praying. He longed to be with His Father in Heaven.  He told parable after parable pointing to heaven. He constantly reminded the disciples about where he was going and that they would be with him. In John 14:2-4 he says, “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way where I am going.” This is just one of many examples of Jesus talking about Heaven and encouraging his disciples to think about it. If our goal is to be like Christ, then we must have heaven on our mind all the time.

It will be easier to say no to sin
If heaven is on our mind it will be difficult to sin. Jesus constantly praised those who would be willing to give up the temporary pleasures that the world offers and buy up stock in heaven. Hebrews 12:1-2 describes a runner who has his sight on heaven, and lays aside any encumbrance, any sin that comes his way so that he can run faster towards his prize, and that is to spend eternity in heaven with their Savior. If Heaven is on our minds sin will seem so worthless in comparison.

It will be easier to not be jealous of the world
A big struggle for college students is wanting to be like the world while claiming Christ. They see their friends party, cheat, watch anything they want without any regrets, and they wish that they could do the same. Christians who have their minds set on heaven have a much easier time dealing with the world’s temptation. In Mark 8:35-36 Jesus says, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?” Jesus makes it clear that nothing this world can offer, even its entirety cannot compare with an eternity with him in heaven.

It will make you more evangelistic
If heaven is on your mind you will share the gospel more often. If you think about it, you will talk about it. You won’t be able to help it.  It will be flowing out of you mind and into your conversations. It will be evident in your conduct and in your speech that your desires are different and that ultimately your goals are counter-cultural. When you look at people, all you will see is souls who are going to spend eternity somewhere and you will want to explain to them how they can have eternal life.

It will increase your joy
It’s very easy to be discouraged. Life is difficult, especially when we live for Christ and share the Gospel. The way towards joy is to be willing to lose this life in order to gain so much more. David had a habit of ending his psalms pointing himself and others toward eternity. He ended Psalm 16 with, “…in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”  Some other examples are Psalm 23:6Psalm 28:9, and Psalm 145:21. When discouraged and depressed the wise man or woman will fix their mind on heaven.

It will increase your thankfulness
The Christian has much to be thankful for, but the greatest blessing comes in the fact that we will spend eternity in heaven. David says in Psalm 30:12, “O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!” He recognizes that we will live with eternal gratitude to the Lord. That thankfulness does not need to begin in heaven, but can begin now as we already have the certainty of it. It’s going to be tough to complain when we know that we will enjoy heaven really soon.

It will help you store up treasure in heaven
Jesus said in Matthew 6:20-21, “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” As Christians, we find value in things that the world could care less about. On the other hand, many things that we used to value suddenly don’t take our attention anymore. Our money, time, and activities are devoted to Christ and making him known.

It will make you more encouraging to others
Because of all the above reasons, if you think and talk about heaven you will be a great encouragement to your brothers and sisters in Christ. You will be able to point others towards joy when discouraged, towards holiness when tempted, and towards evangelism when scared. It is so easy to come to church with a selfish mindset. The one who thinks about heaven sees opportunities not only for evangelism but for encouraging his brothers and sisters in Christ. People need to be thinking about their soul, and you will be the one to point them to heavenly thoughts.

It will please your Savior
Jesus wants you in heaven with him. Two thousand years ago he prayed that the Father would bring us all to heaven. In John 17:24 he says, “Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” Jesus wants us to be with Him, and He wants us to long to be with Him. We must be able to say like Paul, “For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain”. Paul loved serving Christ on earth but was so looking forward to being with his Savior. Jesus will be pleased when we are constantly thinking about being with Him and when we encourage others to cherish being with Him above all else.
